Being different is not a crime. It is nature. It is life. Yet, many in Africa reject LGBTQ+ people. They call it unnatural. But is it?

For centuries, African societies embraced diversity. Different cultures had names for people who did not fit the typical gender roles. They were not outcasts. They were part of the community. They were accepted.

Then, colonialism arrived. Foreign religions followed. They called it a sin. They made it illegal. They forced people to hate what they once understood. Homophobia was not African. It was taught.

Why should someone’s love bother you? If they are not hurting anyone, why the anger? Why the fear? Love is love. It does not need approval. It does not need permission. It just is.

Nature does not reject difference. Trees grow in all shapes. Animals live in all forms. Some birds have same-sex partners. Some fish change gender. Nature is diverse. So is humanity.

Africans must unlearn colonial hatred. Must remember their roots. Must see that love, in any form, is part of life. No one should live in fear for being who they are. No one should hide their truth.

To accept others is not to lose yourself. It is to be free. Free from fear. Free from control. Free from ideas that were never ours to begin with.
