Africans once lived by their own beliefs. Their gods were part of nature. Their spirituality was deep. It wasn’t written in books. It was lived. It was passed down through stories, songs, and traditions. It connected them to their ancestors. It gave them purpose.
Then colonialism came. It didn’t just take land. It took minds. It didn’t just steal resources. It stole identity. It made Africans forget who they were.
Missionaries arrived first. They didn’t come with guns. They came with Bibles. They said they were bringing salvation. But salvation from what? Africans were not lost. They had their own way. But missionaries didn’t see that. They saw people who needed fixing. They called African beliefs evil. They called ancestors demons. They said there was only one God. And He was not African.
At first, many resisted. They held onto their gods. They honored their ancestors. But resistance had consequences. Colonizers had power. They controlled education. They controlled the economy. If you didn’t convert, life became harder.
Many gave in. Not because they believed, but because they had no choice. Children were sent to missionary schools. They were taught to reject their own heritage. They were told their ancestors were primitive. They were told their gods were false.
With time, the old ways faded. Fewer people poured libations for the spirits. Fewer people listened to the wisdom of elders. The link between the living and the dead grew weaker.
Colonial laws also played a role. In many places, practicing African spirituality became illegal. Drumming, rituals, and ceremonies were banned. Temples were destroyed. Sacred sites were taken over. The gods of Africa were buried.
And then came shame. Many Africans stopped practicing their beliefs, not because they didn’t believe, but because they were made to feel ashamed. It became embarrassing to speak of spirits and ancestors. People whispered about traditional healers, fearing they would be judged.
Over time, Christianity and Islam became dominant. New generations grew up knowing little about their ancestors’ faith. Many thought their traditional beliefs were wrong. They forgot that their people once thrived without foreign religions.
But the truth remains. The gods of Africa were never weak. They were silenced. The spirits were never defeated. They were ignored. And now, people are remembering.
Across Africa, many are reclaiming their heritage. They are learning about the old ways. They are honoring their ancestors again. They are seeing that African spirituality was never the enemy. It was a way of life. A powerful one.
Colonialism may have buried African spirituality. But it didn’t kill it. The roots are still there. And they are growing again.
